 > Breast lifting

The surgery’s objective is to lift the areola and the nipple, and reshape the mammal glands as the breast is too low and misplaced in its superior part.
It results in more volume and more curve, conform to the patient's aesthetic wish.

Am I a good candidate for breast lifting?

Yes, if I am a woman who is not satisfied with her breasts, very likely after pregnancies (breastfeeding) or a major weight loss. The mammal ptosis can also be done consequently to a diminution of breast volume, when it is originally too imposing (hypertrophy).

Required conditions: in case of hypertrophy, the surgery can be done as long as the patient is 17 years old minimum, otherwise it is advised to wait after the pregnancies before considering this type of surgery.

How is the surgery performed?

The surgery will basically tighten the skin on the mammal gland which will be centred and put back into the right position, correcting in some cases the asymmetry between the breasts. The nipple and the areola will be moved higher and the leftover skin will be removed to ensure the new breast is tight and with a beautiful shape.

The length, number and place of the incisions depend on the hypertrophy and on the ptosis degree. The three illustrations show the incisions (white dotted line) in the case of a big ptosis.

If the surgery is performed for a ptosis due to insufficient breast volume, a mammal implant can be added.

• Type of anesthesia
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
• Duration of the intervention
It depends on the ptosis degree, in average between 1h30 and 2h30.
• Duration of the hospitalization
In order to guarantee the best postoperative check-up possible, and prevent any complication or side effect, a 1 to 2-day hospitalization is usually required.
• Consequences operating
A breast lifting is usually not very painful and simply requires antalgics. A swelling (edema) and bruises can appear. The drains are usually removed after 24h, when the first dressing is replaced by a lighter one, making a sort of tailor-made elastic bustier. Three days later, during the check-up visit, a support bra (like the sports bras) is placed and guarantees a good setting. It is advised to keep it days and nights for about a month.
If the suture edges are not absorbable, they will be removed between the 8th and the 20th day after the surgery.
It is advised to wait 1 to 2 months before starting sport activities again.
• Followed operating comment

- in the country where the surgery is performed

During your hospitalization the surgeon and his staff monitor to ensure there are no complications occurring. A few follow-up visits are also necessary during the required recovery period (usually about a week), they take place directly at your hotel.

- after you get back to your homeland

During your first week back home your surgeon may stay in close contact with you either by phone, mail or webcam. Your surgeon may also collaborate with your own doctor to ensure your recovery is normal.

You may resume normal activity 15 days after the surgery.
After three months, your surgeon monitors the first results to ensure they are satisfying. In some cases, you may require additional corrections or treatment. The final results of a breast lifting can take up to 12 months after the surgery.
Examples of unsatisfying results requiring additional treatments (corrections):
- scars can sometimes remain widened, white or brown.
- there could still be an asymmetry between the breasts, be it their volume, level, size, or areola directions.

• Risks of complications and unwanted effects

Your surgeon will inform you of all the risks involved during your first discussions but also every time you will have a question. You will be then asked to sign a consent form which contains all the details of the whole surgery procedure.

Medical literature lists some of the following potential complications (apart from the ones directly linked to anesthesia):

- infection that requires an antibiotic cure and sometimes a surgery drainage.
- hematoma that requires a blood evacuation
- a skin necrosis
- sensation loss of the nipples (reappears in most cases within 6 to 18 months)
- problems linked to scarring (main complication)

Without over-estimating the risks, it is necessary to fully understand that even a simple surgery is dependant on a certain amount of unpredictable factors.
Choosing a qualified plastic surgeon ensures you that he/she has the required education, skill and experience to avoid these complications or to efficiently treat them when necessary.
