Breast augmentationis one of the most popular aesthetic surgeries. Breast implantsare inserted to increase volume and to improve appearance.
Am i a good candidate for a breast augmentation? You should consider it if you are not satisfied with your breast size and shape and are willing to improve your self image. You may have had a mammary hypertrophy or asymmetry at puberty, suffered from an important weight loss caused by a strict diet or breast feeding (mammary involutions), or simply feel the aging process. The minimum age required corresponds to the time when your body is fully developed, that is at the end of puberty. Psychological maturity is also an important factor taken into account by the physicians.
Medical requirement: none in particular
How is the surgery performed? Three different types of skin incisions through wich the breats implants is inserted: either under the armpit ( axillary incision), under the nipple (areolary incision). Scars become gradually invisible.

Note : These pictures show a common clinical case, these results cannot be guaranteed to another person.
Breast implants are placed either under the gland (sub-glandular position), or under the chest (sub-pectoral position), but never inside the mammary gland itself, which allows natural functioning (pregnancy), as well as control procedure (palpation, mammography and ultrasound scan).

Pain is more vivid in the case of a breast implant inserted behind the muscle (sub-pectoral position). Specific and powerful pain-killing medicine is usually prescribed.
Note : Surgeons will discuss with you the benefits and disadvantages of each of these techniques and will explain the reasons why they prefer one or the other depending on your wishes and your psychological maturity.

• What is a breast implant? |
It is a « biocompatible » material, i.e. it is no toxic therefore not rejected by the human body.
Packaging
It is a shell made of solid silicone, it may have a smooth or a textured outer surface, and the latter should limit the formation of «prosthetic head» according to scientific studies recently published.

Contents
Implants are either saline (water + salt) or cohesive silicone gel filled, which does not bleed into the capsule if the cohesive gel implant is torn. The latter are mostly used as they offer the best aesthetic, comfort and lasting results.
How long do Breast implants last?
Breast implants get old and need to be replaced, apart from any major problems occurring earlier. For saline filled implants: up to 10 years. For silicone gel ones: between 10 and 15 years.
Shape
Breast implants could be either round or anatomical shaped
Anatomical implants give a less rounded appearance to the breast.
Note : Surgeons will advise you on how to choose the most suitable implant for you depending on your morphology

| • Type of anesthesia |
| The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. |
|
| • Duration of the intervention |
| Approximately one hour |
|
| • Duration of the hospitalization |
| It is recommended to stay two nights at the hospital in order to ensure the best post-surgery surveillance possible therefore limiting the complications and side-effects. |
|
| • Consequences operating |
| An edema may appear at first, giving a swollen appearance to the breasts. It will disappear after a few weeks, when the skin and muscle get less tight. |

| • Followed operating comment |
- In the country where the surgery is performed
During your hospitalization the surgeon and his staff monitor to ensure there are no complications occurring. A few follow-up visits are also necessary during the required recovery period (usually about a week), they take place directly at your hotel.
-After you get back to your homeland
During your first week back home your surgeon may stay in close contact with you either by phone, mail or webcam. Your surgeon may also collaborate with your own doctor to ensure your recovery is normal.
You may resume normal activity 10 days after the surgery.
After 3 months: a follow-up control visit
Your surgeon controls if the first results are satisfying. In some cases, you may require additional corrections or treatment. The final results of a mammary augmentation can be assessed 8 to 12 months after the surgery.
Examples of unsatisfying results requiring additional treatments (corrections):
- abnormal scar evolution (thickening or shrinkage) - progressive implant dislocation
|
|
| • Risks of complications and unwanted effects |
Your surgeon will inform you of all the risks involved during your first discussions but also every time you will have a question. You will be then asked to sign a consent form which contains all the details of the whole surgery procedure.
Medical literature lists some of the following potential complications (apart from the ones directly linked to anesthesia):
-Precocious (immediate): - Implant dislocation - Hematoma - Change in the breast and/or areola sensation -Secondary (middle or long term): - Infection - Formation of prosthetic heads - Silicone gel filled implant torn by brutal injury - Deflation for saline filled implants
The Breast augmentation surgery has made crucial progress these past years notably thanks to the last generation implants.
Without over-estimating the risks, it is necessary to fully understand that even a simple surgery is dependant on a certain amount of unpredictable factors. Choosing a qualified plastic surgeon ensures you that he/she has the required education, skill and experience to avoid these complications or to efficiently treat them when necessary.
