 > Surgery of the nose ( Rhinoplastie)

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape the cartilage-bony skeleton of the nose usually by cutting inside the rim of the nostrils, so that the scar is invisible. As a result, the nose will look more in harmony and in better proportion with the rest of the face.

Am I a good candidate for the rhinoplasty?
You may consider it if you are not satisfied with your nose appearance: you find it deviated, upturned, not in proportion... Any reason is acceptable as long as the patient suffers from discontent. The patient will have to keep in mind though that not everything can be done, the request will have to be realistic.
The required minimum age for a rhinoplasty is at the end of puberty when the nose reaches its normal size. The psychological maturity of patients is also considered by the plastic surgeons in their decision to carry out the surgery or not.
Required conditions: none

How is the surgery performed?

It varies depending on the required surgical correction:
For the tip of the nose: the surgeon will reshape the cartilage by reducing or increasing its size with grafts (ear cartilage or nasal septum)
For a hump: reduction of the bony excrescence
For a long nose: reduction of the too developed nasal septum
Very thin absorbable edges are used for the sutures, and drains are put into the nostrils for about 24 hours. A plaster will be placed on the nose for 8 to 10 days.

Please note: these pictures show a common clinical case, these results cannot be guaranteed to another person.
• Type of anesthesia
The surgery is mainly performed under general anesthetic.
• Duration of the intervention
The surgery lasts from 1h to 2h in average.
• Duration of the hospitalization
In order to guarantee the best postoperative check-up possible, and prevent any complication or side effect, it is recommended to spend one to two nights at the clinic.
• Consequences operating
The pain is usually minimal, except when the drains are removed from the nose; anyway some antalgics can be prescribed. Bruises will appear under the eyes, but disappear after a week. The nose will remain swollen for a few weeks.
• Followed operating comment

•        In the country where the surgery is performed

During your hospitalization the surgeon and his staff monitor to ensure there are no complications occurring. A few follow-up visits are also necessary during the required recovery period (usually about a week), they take place directly at your hotel.

•         After you get back to your homeland

During your first week back home your surgeon may stay in close contact with you either by phone, mail or webcam. Your surgeon may also collaborate with your own doctor to ensure your recovery is normal.

You may resume normal activity 10 days after the surgery.

After 3 months: a check-up visit
Your surgeon monitors the first results to ensure they are satisfying. In some cases, you may require additional corrections or treatment. The permanent result of a rhinoplasty can only be evaluated 6 to 8 months after the surgery.

Examples of unsatisfying results requiring additional treatments (corrections):
- Unusual cicatricial signs
- Unexpected tissue reaction (bad spontaneous smoothing of the skin)
- Retractile fibrosis
• Risks of complications and unwanted effects
Your surgeon will inform you of all the risks involved during your first discussions but also every time you will have a question. You will be then asked to sign a consent form which contains all the details of the whole surgery procedure.

Medical literature lists some of the following potential complications (apart from the ones directly linked to anesthesia):

- Early Complications (almost immediate after surgery)
       - Bruises under the eyes
       - Difficulty to breathe
       - Consistent pain

- Secondary complications (mid-long term)
Unsatisfactory cosmetic results (asymmetry of the nostrils, or nose tip)

Without over-estimating the risks, it is necessary to fully understand that even a simple surgery is dependant on a certain amount of unpredictable factors.
Choosing a qualified plastic surgeon ensures you that he/she has the required education, skill and experience to avoid these complications or to efficiently treat them when necessary.
• Price lists

As an indication the price a Rhinoplastyin Tunisia or in Morocco is : 1250 to 1500 €, in France the price charged is 3000 to 4500 €.
