 > Transplant of the hair

Hair Replacement surgery consist of taking some hair from the patient himself ( autograft thus no rejection possible) in the "crown" area (those never fall) between the ears in order to implant them on thinning spots (forehead, tonsure). Hair plays an an important role in seduction and hair loss is often seen as an early sign of aging.

How is the surgery performed?

Whatever the baldness type (area, degree, evolution) the hair replacement procedure is always performed in 4 steps:
- Step 1: The sample: a flap of scalp about 4 inches long and 0.2 inches wide is taken as a sample at the back of the head between the ears (crown) depending on the quantity of “grafts” (each of them has 1 to 3 hairs) needed for the implantation. Sutures are made with absorbable edges that will leave a small scar hidden by surrounding hair.
- Step 2: Graft Preparation: Grafts are prepared depending on the area to cover and the patient’s wish (color, thickness, shape) by cutting the flap under microscope. Some grafts will have 1 to 2 hairs, some 3 to 6.
- Step 3: Preparation of the relocation area: Slits that will receive the grafts are done with a specific needle in order to respect the direction of hair growth.
- Step 4: To implant hair in a natural fashion, the grafts of 1 to 2 hairs will be put on the sides of the forehead, whereas the graft of 3 to 6 hairs will be relocated at the back of the forehead to get the maximum volume possible.

• Type of anesthesia
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia with sedative supplement if necessary.
• How long does the surgery last?
It depends on the number of grafts to be implanted, it will be between 2 to 3 hours for 500 grafts (1,000 hairs in average).
• Hospitalization Time
The patient can leave the hospital on the same day of the surgery, after a few check-up hours in most cases.
• My recovery
The potential post-anesthesia pain is minimal and does not last long (antalgics will be prescribed). Small scabs will appear in each area that was implanted and will remain for about a week, the grafted hair will fall with the scabs and grow again within 2 to 3 months, half an inch a month.
An edema or bruises can appear depending on the person.
• Follow-up care

 -  In the country where the surgery is performed
During your hospitalization the surgeon and his staff monitor to ensure there are no complications occurring. A few follow-up visits are also necessary during the required recovery period (usually about a week), they take place directly at your hotel.

 -  After you get back to your homeland

During your first week back home your surgeon may stay in close contact with you either by phone, mail or webcam. Your surgeon may also collaborate with your own doctor to ensure your recovery is normal.

You may resume normal activity 2 to 3 days after the surgery.

After three months, your surgeon monitors the first results to ensure they are satisfying. In some cases, you may require additional corrections or treatment.
• What are the risks for potential complications and side effects?
Your surgeon will inform you of all the risks involved during your first discussions but also every time you will have a question. You will be then asked to sign a consent form which contains all the details of the whole surgery procedure.
Medical literature lists some of the following potential complications (apart from the ones directly linked to anesthesia):
- Hematomas: bleedings are rare and light
- Infection (rare): if any, antibiotics will be prescribed
- Temporary hair loss around the area implanted
- Epidermal cysts that will disappear on its own

Baldness surgery has improved significantly. Through the micro-graft procedure, it can address the main aesthetic hair loss problems encountered by men and women.
Choosing a qualified plastic surgeon ensures you that he/she has the required education, skill and experience to avoid these complications or to efficiently treat them when necessary.
